The 23rd Annual “Round the County” sailboat race is scheduled for Nov. 6 and 7.

Though this may be a closely held secret in San Juan County, in the Northwest sailing community, it is a big event. There are more than 70 boats registered for the two-day race, which is sponsored by the Orcas Island Yacht Club and the Friday Harbor Sailing Club.

The race starts Saturday morning at Lydia Shoal, just east of Obstruction Pass, and finishes at Roche Harbor, where boaters spend the night and then re-start and sail around the second half of the county, finishing at Lydia Shoal on Sunday afternoon.

There are boats from 27 to 90 feet long, including last year’s winner the “Martha,” which is over 100 years old.

Orcas favorites include Chris White’s “Crazy Ivan,” Bob and Barb Brunius’ “Time Bandit,” Eric Moulton and Betsy Wareham’s “Ptolemy,” and Gary Morgan and Ian Wareham’s “What a Tripp” as well as Lynn Adkins with “Tinette” from Friday Harbor.
