Orcas Islanders interested in the joining the Rotary Club gathered at Island Hoppin’ on Friday, July 8 to discuss the future of the club on the island.

“It’s a great club in Friday Harbor,” said Rick Hughes, who is currently a Rotarian in the Friday Harbor organization. “I think we can make really good use of the people here.”

Hughes wants to create a branch of the existing Friday Harbor Rotary to extend over to Orcas Island rather than make an entirely new club. This branch concept is something that is not common in the rotary, but the islands provide an unique challenge for attending regular meetings.

Still, Hughes hopes that Orcas is open to bringing the Rotary Club into the current mix of service-based clubs in the community.

“It’s just a fun environment,” said Hughes. “It’s a great way to socialize and do something fun.”
