A 25-year-old Orcas Island man remains in custody following an alleged home invasion in which he reportedly broke into a home in the Rosario area on Sunday, Dec. 22, demanding money and threatening the people living there with an assault rifle.

Although he wore a mask at the time, the man reportedly was recognized and fled the home when those living there identified him and called him out by name, according to local authorities.

No shots were fired or injuries reported. The man allegedly forced his way into the home at around 10:20 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies were unable to locate the suspect on the night of the break-in, but the alleged would-be armed robber turned himself in at San Juan County Sheriff’s headquarters in Eastsound Monday morning.

He was taken into custody without incident and faces felony charges of first-degree burglary with a firearm, first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree assault with a firearm, and malicious mischief, a misdemeanor.

Bail was set at $10,000 following a preliminary court hearing Tuesday, and the case remains under investigation, Sheriff Rob Nou said.
