The Public School Montessori Program, one of Orcas’ most innovative educational institutions, is now actively enrolling for the 2008/09 school year.

The Public School Montessori Program is a 1st through 3rd grade Montessori classroom that operates within the Orcas Public Elementary School.

Now finishing up its 5th year, the successful and unusual hybrid program is a rarity in today’s public schools. The Program is directed by Martha Inch, who has been involved since the program’s inception.

While unusual and progressive, there are a handful of Montessori classes within public schools in Washington. One in Seattle at the Daniel Bagley Elementary school was the model for the Orcas program.

Children of different ages work independently, in small groups and with the entire class.

Ideally children enroll in this class as a first grader and remain with the program until they transition into fourth grade. All children are invited to enroll and no previous Montessori experience is necessary.

While the class does adhere to the acclaimed Montessori teaching style, the students work is also aligned with State standards and follows the same assessments that are used within the primary grades at the Elementary School. The curriculum is designed to allow children a smooth transition upon exiting into the traditional classrooms.
