Public invited to tour estuary restoration project in Deer Harbor

Deer Harbor community property owners and the conservation group People For Puget Sound invite the public to free guided tours on Oct. 16 of restoration work underway along Fish Trap Creek and Deer Harbor Slough.

Tours showing how local residents Corey Cookston and Bob Conner are restoring valuable riparian habitat on their properties will begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. from the parking lot at the Deer Harbor Community Center, 4310 Deer Harbor Road.

The tour will highlight how local landowners are removing fish passage barriers on Fish Trap Creek, which empties into Cayou Lagoon (locally known as Deer Harbor Slough), and restoring native plant communities at the site. These restoration projects benefit the long-term health of the estuary and the recovery of depleted salmon populations.

Project partners include Ken Brown, Madrona Murphy, Russell Barsh, Sam Bullock, Howard Barber and Sheila Gaguin, and Jeff Iverson.

The tours are free and open to the public but RSVP to Diane Tilstra, dtilstra@pugetsound.org or call 206.382.7007 x120.
