The Orcas Island School District Board, at a special School Board meeting, reduced certificated teaching and administrative personnel by the equivalent of 7.77 full-time positions on Wednesday, April 30. Their action was deemed necessary in an effort to deal with reduced revenue projections for the 08-09 school year, and with legal obligations.
The special meeting of the Fire Department Board of Commissioners and the Strategic Plan committee members took place on April 29. In an extensive report, Chief Mike Harris reviewed the goals of the plan adopted in 2005.

The community’s weekly summer Farmers Market returns this Saturday, May 3 to Eastsound Village Green. “We’ll be back with our awesome farmers, food producers, flower growers, fine artisans and on-the-spot delicious, prepared food,” says Julie Miller, Farmers Market manager for the past seven years. “This year we’ll have the addition of six new vendors and Salmonberry School. We will showcase more local musicians this season and childrens’ story-telling hour will continue as a priority.”
The following students from Orcas Island have been named to the Dean’s List at the University of Washington for Winter Quarter: Barry Meyer Cousteau Jones, a senior; Natasha Alexa Warachowski, a senior; and Madeline Woods Bredouw, a junior.
The 71st Annual Meeting of the members of Orcas Power and Light Cooperative (OPALCO) is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 on the Anacortes ferry. All members and their families are invited and encouraged to attend. There are 900 electric co-ops in the nation, and OPALCO is famous for being the only co-op to have its annual meeting aboard a ferry. Co-op member participation is key: OPALCO must have a quorum of at least 100 members on the ferry to meet the requirements for its annual meeting.
Whatcom Community College announced the students appointed to the Dean’s List for Winter Quarter 2008, and Conrad V. Wrobel was on the list. Students are named to the Dean’s List for high scholastic achievement. Conrad is the son of Laura Wrobel.
