Council members vow to take Border Patrol operations at Anacortes to higher-ups
Six Orcas Christian High School students, along with teachers Ron Claus and BruceGregg passed their final SCUBA exam on Sunday, April 27, 2008. They completed four dives in chilly Puget Sound and learned how to take care of themselves and each other underwater. Thane Sweet, Colton Guilford, Brittany Wachter, Jeff Blankenship, Andrew Smith and Stephen Baker now are all certified divers and can SCUBA dive anywhere in the world.
For the 14th consecutive year, the University of Washington School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine has reviewed Orcas Family Health Center (OFHC) physician David Shinstrom’s credentials and reappointed him as Clinical Instructor.
The San Juan County Land Bank is inviting public comment on its Draft Habitat Conservation Plan: 2008-2014. The plan identifies core conservation areas important for maintaining rare terrestrial species and ecological communities in the San Juans. The Land Bank intends to use the plan to help focus its efforts to conserve these ecological resources. Preservation of areas with ecological value is just one element of the Land Bank’s mission and this is the only element discussed in the Draft Plan.
On May 17, the agency with what is arguably the most awkward name in State Government – the Lead Entity – will sponsor a Salmon Recovery/Lead Entity Day celebration at the Deer Harbor Community Club on Orcas Island. The celebration begins at 10:30 a.m. with live music, a kids’ camp, field trips, a few speeches, and lunch.
Houston Taylor, a Shaw Island resident who leads the Skagit Hospice team serving all of San Juan County, has been named a Real Hero by the Anacortes/San Juan Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross. He will be honored at the Real Heroes Breakfast on May 14 at the Northern Lights Casino in Anacortes.
It’s time to bring history to life with the Orcas Island Historical Museum and Crow Valley School Museum. Exhibits open May 23 at the Museum in Eastsound and on May 24 at the Crow Valley School.
