Large wood-and-steel sculptures by Islander Todd Spalti will dominate an exhibition of his current work to be presented at Orcas Center Gallery throughout June. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, May 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Orcas Center still seeks submissions for original monologues that explore our love or disdain of pets. The theme for the 2008 Monologue Night, which is Friday, June 13, is: “Pets: Why We Live With Them, Why We Don’t.”
The presenter, James Warren, will be brought to the Islands by the San Juan PTA, which asked Lopez and Orcas if there would be interest in conducting their own assemblies with Warren. “This is a great opportunity to have access to a high quality performer and focused presenter,” said Barb Skotte, Orcas Island PTSA President.
Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Friday Harbor has been serving the wild animal rehabilitation needs of all of the San Juan Islands and seven northwest Washington counties for 25 years. Its major function is to care for animals hurt or impacted from human-related causes. “We’ve treated more than 12,000 animals and 220 native species since we were founded,” said Julie Knight, executive director of the Wolf Hollow Board.
Leadership San Juan Islands announces graduation for Class IV from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday May 30 at Skagit Valley College in Friday Harbor. Graduates David Bentley, Carrie Burke, Georgeana Cook, Anna Maria deFreitas, Grisha Krivchenia, Christine Miller, Gail Leschine-Seitz, Kyle Loring, Paul King, Tracie Red Elk, Anji Ringzin and Amy Windrope will present their proposed service projects and receive certificates of completion.
Lopez Island School District officials have announced the list of colleges and universities to which the class of 2008 graduates has been accepted. The Seniors graduate on June 7 in a traditional Saturday afternoon ceremony. This year’s graduates have been accepted to an alphabet soup of colleges around the country.

On the afternoon of May 14, a single-occupant vehicle went off Enchanted Forest Road and over an embankment, rolling over twice before landing on its roof.
In preparation for the busy Memorial Day weekend, WSDOT Ferries Division is rolling out the second phase of its new pilot reservations program for the Port Townsend/Keystone route. On Monday, May 19, customers will be able to use advance reservations to receive priority boarding on the ferry. They will also be able to make both advance and same-day reservations by phone and at the Port Townsend and Keystone terminals starting Monday.

On Sunday, May 4 the Orcas Island Yacht Club held its annual Opening Day Yacht Parade honoring Commodore Katie Thomas to the theme of “Pirates of Orcas Island.”
On May 17, the County’s Lead Entity for Salmon Recovery presented a day highlighting the protection and recovery efforts of the habitats critical to salmon survival. The Lead Entity produced the event, which included a Kids’ Camp, displays by the San Juan Nature Institute, People for Puget Sound and Friends of the San Juans among others, and luncheon and field trips, was funded by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and federal and state salmon recovery money. Walking and boat tours of the estuary rounded out the day. About 45 people attended the event were some of the groups that displayed at the event in the Deer Harbor Community Clubhouse.
