    Sail Orcas announces the 15th year of the Orcas Island Junior Sailing Program. Students between the ages of eight and 15 will have the opportunity this summer to learn to sail in a variety of boats and under a variety of conditions. Hannah Tuson-Turner is the lead instructor.

    On May 16-18, twelve members of the Orcas Island Rowing Team traveled to Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash. to compete against the best in the Northwest at the U.S. Rowing Junior Regional Championship Regatta. Out of that field of over 1,000 athletes, two from Orcas Island, Barrett North and Sam Parish, qualified to compete in the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship Regatta by placing second in the Men’s Lightweight 2x (double) with a time of 7:24.34 over a 2,000-meter course (only 3.29 seconds behind first place).

    The PTSA voted in the Board for the upcoming 08-09 year Tuesday night at the regular meeting. Barb Skotte will continue as President, with Anne Garfield continuing in the role of Vice-President. Marian O’Brien will continue in the dual role of Secretary/Treasurer, with Vicki Vandermay and Michelle Kostechko sharing the roles of Volunteer/Membership Coordinators. Pat Lohman will be the Program Coordinator, Lorena Stankevich will stay on as Immediate Past President and Susan Stolmeier will stay on as Elementary Teacher Representative.

    Bruce Orchid has officially filed for the District 4 position on the San Juan County Council representing Orcas West. Orchid traveled to his old job site, the County Courthouse, (having served as San Juan County Commissioner from 1989-1992), to personally file on June 6. Orchid has lived in the Orcas West district the entire 33 years he has lived on Orcas Island.
