Orcas School community meeting and open house

The PTSA will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the school library to hear a brief presentation about the upcoming school bond and levy on the Feb. 9 ballot, and to provide the community with an opportunity to ask questions.

Butch Reifert, managing partner of the architecture firm Mahlum, will provide brief background information on the studies and findings that were completed by local and off-island engineers and consultants, that helped determine the scope of the renovation and construction necessary to address issues of health and safety, operational issues and educational program needs of the schools.

Mahlum has designed and overseen construction in hundreds of public school projects in the Pacific Northwest over the past 70 years.

Superintendent Barbara Kline and school board members will answer questions about the bond and levy from the audience. There will also be materials available that detail all parts of the process to date. More information is available on the school website, www.orcasislandschools.org.

Childcare will be provided.

On Saturday, Jan. 23 from 10 to 1 p.m., the school district will host continuous presentations and tours of the grounds and facilities in order to educate the community about the upcoming renovation and construction bond.

Ongoing presentations in the school library by Mahlum project architect David Mount will give background information on the projects to be undertaken, the various costs connected with the projects, the materials to be considered, and systems that will need renovation, such as the heating and ventilation systems.

School board members Scott Lancaster, Janet Brownell, Keith Whitaker and Tony Ghazel will give tours of specific facilities around the campus with information on the conditions and needs of those particular buildings and grounds. There will be maps available in the library with detailed information about each location. For more information visit the school web site, www.orcasislandschools.org.
