Orcas Lions Club events: Easter Egg hunt, health screenings, White Canes and Recycle for Sight

The Orcas Lions Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 23 at the picnic shelter at Moran State Park. The hunt starts at 10 a.m. “The way the kids go it will be done by 10:15 a.m.,” said Lion Jim Biddick. “Get there early so that your young ones are not disappointed.” On May 9 and 10 the Club will host the Lions Health Screening Van in front of Island Market from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The unit screens for diabetes, vision, glaucoma, blood pressure and hearing.

On May 9 and 10 the Club will host the Lions Health Screening Van in front of Island Market from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The unit screens for diabetes, vision, glaucoma, blood pressure and hearing.

Later in the month the Lions will be in front of Island Market for their annual White Canes Campaign through the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing. Donations are greatly appreciated. Last year the club was able to provide three cataract surgeries through the Foundation, and already have one scheduled for this year.

May is also Recycle for Sight Month. People can put their old glasses in the Lions Club drop box in the Post Office building just across from the bulletin board. The Orcas Lions collect the glasses and sunglasses and send them to the regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, where they are reconditioned and sent to developing countries. The program was officially adopted by the Lions in 1994 and has been running for over 80 years. The Lions’ goal is to collect 3,000 pairs of glasses in May; they also accept glasses throughout the year.

The Lions invite the community to attend one of their weekly meetings, held every Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. at the American Legion Hall on Crescent Beach Rd.

“Come see what we are all about,” said Biddick.
