Two-hour delay for Orcas School District Dec. 13

UPDATE:

Due to the freezing temperatures forecasted for tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 13, there will be a 2-hour delayed start of school, and buses will be on snow routes this means that the buses will be picking up and dropping off children to and from the following locations:

Deer harbor route: No changes to the current route.

Orcas route: No stops past La Porte Road; no stops at West Beach; no stops at Enchanted Forest Road; no stops at Mt. Baker Road; no stops at Dolphin Bay Road.

Olga route (middle bus): No stops at Terrill Beach/Buckhorn; no stop at Obstruction Pass; the bus will not go past Shorewood Drive in Doe Bay.

The decision to remain open, delay, or close school is not an easy one, and conditions may vary considerably in a district of 59 square miles. This district recognizes that snow days often disrupt family schedules and extend the school year, but our first consideration will always be the safety of students, staff, and families. Please note that parents always have the final decision on whether or not they send their child to school in the event of severe weather conditions.

Where to access information about EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSURES:

  • Call the district notification line at 376-1596 for the most updated information.
  • When possible, information will be posted on the school website, Facebook and emailed via the district Listserv.
  • Announcements will also be made on the following radio and television stations: KAFE FM 104.3 Bellingham, KGMI 790 AM, TV King Channel 5T and TV KOMO Channel 4.

Three procedures to listen and look for:

  • Procedure no. 1- School will begin at the regular time; however, shortened bus routes (see below) will be in effect due to snowy/icy conditions.
  • Procedure no. 2 – All schools will open two hours late, and school buses will run approximately two hours late. Shortened bus routes (see below) will be in effect.
  • Procedure no. 3 – All schools will open two hours late, and school buses will run approximately two hours late. Shortened bus routes (see below) will be in effect.

Shortened bus routes means NO STOPS AT THE FOLLOWING ROADS: Terrill Beach/Buckhorn, Killebrew Lake Road, Dolphin Bay Road, Obstruction Pass, No stops past Shorewood Drive in Doe Bay, Mt Baker Road, Spring Point (across the bridge), Enchanted Forest Road and West Beach Road.
