Orcas Island Recreation Program July activities

The Orcas Island Recreation Program is offering whale watching, beach scavenging, a soccer clinic and art programs this July.

Children seven and older will look for Orca whales, bald eagles, seals, porpoises and numerous bird species in a guided trip with experienced captain and naturalist Tom Averna of Deer Harbor Charters. The educational day is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. on July 16 at the Deer Harbor Marina. The cost is $30 for children up to 17 years of age and $40 for everyone older.

A three-day summer soccer clinic will be held on July 20 to 22 with

high school soccer coaches Chama Anderson and Matt Stolmeier for high school soccer team players. The camp runs each day from 9 a.m. to noon at Buck Park. All experience levels will learn soccer skills in scrimmages, skills development and World Cup games. The cost is $60 and helps fund the soccer teams. Partial scholarships are available.

San Juan Nature Institute joins Orcas Rec. in offering a Beach Scavenger Hunt around Indian Island on July 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Children age’s six to 12 will explore the beach and rocks with a challenge sheet to guide their discoveries. The cost is $15 for children. There is no fee for adults accompanying children.

Beginning Drawing & Painting will be offered on July 21 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Services Building for ages 8 and up. For $20, participants will explore the creative process and learn to draw from life and basic painting skills. Instructor Kathryn Thurman is the author and artist of the children’s book “Evelyn’s Angels.” Her paintings have been shown nationally and published in several magazines.

The class “You Can Make It” will be offered on three days, July 13, 20 and 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Cheryl Jackson will teach the $20 class where children will make projects including silly putty, paper crafts such as Chinese lanterns and window butterflies and beading necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings. Participants, ages six to 12, may sign up for one, two, or three sessions and should register for each class separately.
