Surveys really do matter. You told us and we listened.
The responses to the 2009 Library Survey indicated that a number of residents would like to use the library on Sundays, which for some people is the only day of the week that is feasible.
After board and staff discussion it was decided that beginning Jan. 17 through the end of June there will be a trial run to determine if library hours on Sundays are in fact important. If so, the library will plan to continue it for at least another six months, at which point they will evaluate whether to proceed with permanent Sunday hours.
Most people feel a personal relationship to the library. Whether a twice a year user or a daily user, the library exists for the public. Think of Sunday afternoon as library time to use as you wish: to socialize, read magazines, check out videos, books or CDs, to use the computers, or to write; there is no one correct way to have a relationship with the library.
Susannah Beck, a new library staff member, will be working during the Sunday test. Some of the Library Trustees have offered to help where needed during the new Sunday hours. There may also be library volunteers working on some days.
Funding for this trial run is generously provided by Orcas residents Bob Henigson and Bob Lundeen, both strong supporters of the plan to offer Sunday hours. We thank them for their belief in this endeavor.
Remember, Orcas Island Library is more than just a structure perched on a grassy knoll overlooking Eastsound; it’s also a place where knowledge and imagination can roam freely.
