The WSU Master Gardeners and Firewise Communities have teamed with Moran State Park and the Orcas High School Key Club to make the park safer against wildfires this summer.

Their first project occurred at the top of Mount Constitution on Saturday, May 31. The site was chosen because of the popularity of that area during the hot, dry summer months. The goal of the workday was to reduce the fuels near the parking lot, concentrating on the structures in that area.

Another collaboration involving wildfire is also in the works for July. YMCA-Camp Orkila has partnered with the Master Gardeners, Firewise Communities and the state park system to present a day camp for middle school kids that is all about wildfire. It will be held July 14-25. Mornings will be filled with fire experiments, learning how to prepare for a fire, and understanding its role in our island ecosystem. Afternoons will be spent engaged in Orkila’s usual camp activities. The kids will take a trip to Sucia Island and have an overnight at Moran, complete with Native American stories about fire.
