Orcas Island High School girls basketball coach Haley Cruz Winchell has been named “Coach of the Year” in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Cruz Winchell led the Vikings to a 15-7 overall record and a 15-5 district record, which included a postseason appearance.

The Orcas Island High School girls’ basketball team also won the league’s sportsmanship award.

“I was shocked and did not expect that acknowledgment from my peers. The other coaches talked about how much they noticed our team’s improvement throughout the season, and it’s well-deserved. I am honored and grateful, and I owe a lot to my extraordinary coaching team this year — Molly Donovan, Jen Winter, Lisa Rios and Shea Sasan,” said Cruz Winchell.

Cruz Winchell received the award after a vote by the other coaches in the league.

Orcas Athletic Director Paul Steimel was thrilled with the decision and believes it was a great way to recognize the coach for her commitment to the program and the student-athletes.

“Coach Haley Cruz Winchell’s dedication, leadership, and passion for the game have been instrumental in the team’s success, making her truly deserving of the Coach of the Year award,” he said. “Her ability to inspire and develop her players, both on and off the court, has set a standard of excellence that has led to an incredible season. Coach Winchell’s hard work and commitment to her team have rightfully earned her this prestigious recognition.”
