Orcas Animal Protection Society offers free spaying and neutering

The Orcas Animal Protection Society will offer free spaying or neutering for dogs and cats of Orcas residents on Feb. 22 in honor of National Spay Day.

In honor of National Spay Day on Feb. 22, the Orcas Animal Protection Society will offer free spaying/neutering for dogs and cats of Orcas Island residents. A grant from the Bernice Barbour Foundation provides the funding to cover surgical costs with qualified volunteers providing the necessary pre- and post-operative care. The service will be offered for as long as the funding lasts.

Participants may also have their pet microchipped. For just $10, a tiny computer chip is injected under the pet’s skin; a unique identification number on the chip allows quick identification of the pet if it is lost. The procedure is safe for animals of all ages, the society says.

Spaying and neutering are routine surgical procedures that not only prevent unwanted litters, but also keep animals healthier, more content and better behaved.

“Neutering your male animal reduces aggression toward other animals and eliminates most roaming and fighting, reducing the risk of injury and infections. Neutered males are also less likely to mark indoor and outdoor turf,” organizers say.

“Spaying your female dog or cat makes her far easier to live with by eliminating heat cycles and annoyance from roaming males. Spaying can also eliminate a number of potential health problems, including tumors and uterine diseases.”
