Call for poetry

In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, there will be a display of Orcas Poets in the library. To submit two poems, either email them to moldoff@rockisland.com or bring hard copies to the library by March 23.

Literature class

Richard Fadem will teach a class this spring on “Swann’s Way,” the first volume of Proust’s “Remembrance of Things Past.” For the most part students will rely on the translation by Moncrieff-Kilmartin (in stock at Darvill’s), though Fadem notes that other versions are also welcome, and that Lydia Davis’ translation might be especially interesting for comparative purposes.

The class will begin on April 15 and run for six weeks at the Parish Hall on Wednesdays from 10 to 12:30. Sign up at the Orcas Library. The class fee is $20.

Ladies spring lunch in April

Orcas women are invited to the Ladies Spring Luncheon on Saturday, April 4 at 11:30 a.m., sponsored by the Orcas Island Community Church, to be hosted this year by Camp Orkila in the lodge dining room.

Guests will be served one of Camp Orkila’s famous hot meals with a choice of two entrées – salmon or herb roasted chicken. A reservation is required and the price is $20. Please call Susan Clark at 376-7046 and send checks, made out to “OICC,” to P.O. Box 235, Orcas, WA 98280. Reservations need to be in by March 26.

Orcas’s “homegrown” Natalie Montgomery Warren, the daughter of the late Bill Montgomery, will treat the group to a special presentation. The theme this year is “A Pattern for Life” and the décor will be a display of local quilts as well as specially made quilted centerpieces.

The subject of Warren’s presentation is “Five Decades Later … The Things God has Taught me since cheerleading For OIHS.”

Little League season is coming

On March 21 on the fields behind Orcas High School, kids are invited to try out for Little League.

Registrations must be received by April 1 to be assured an opportunity to play. Registration forms are available at the school offices and should be dropped off at the Archipelago Survey office on Madrona, one block south of the public school.

Some partial scholarships and/or arrangements for parent involvement in lieu of partial tuition will be available.)

Orcas Island Little League is an all volunteer effort dedicated to supporting children in learning new skills, developing good sportsmanship and having a great time. Parents are invited to volunteer with coaching, helping with barbecues, lining up teams, helping register, cheering on the players, etc. Contact Pat Hunt for details at 376-2810.
