A local diver died after experiencing medical complications near Johns Island on Tuesday afternoon.

The 69-year-old male was diving to repair the lines that tie up boats for mooring purposes on Aug 30. San Juan County Undersheriff Brent Johnson said that the man “had what we believe was a medical situation and was not able to be revived.” The man was a resident of Johns Island.

His wife and friend were on the boat while he was in the water and were able to call 911 once they found out he was having complications. They were able to get him on the beach, which was only 100 feet away.

Fish and Wildlife personnel and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the call. They performed CPR but were unable to revive the man.

“It’s a shame,” said Johnson. “These things are always tough.”

The body has been taken to Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office.
