Fresh off the success of his jazz festival in September, Martin Lund is presenting “Brazilian Nights” with Paula Santoro, Ian Faquini and Jeff Busch.

“When I think of Brazilian singers, I hear Paula Santoro,” said Lund.

The performers will share music from their new album and tunes from the contemporary Brazilian songbook on Saturday, Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m. at the Orcas Island Community Church. Tickets are $25 at Darvill’s Bookstore.

Orcas audiences will remember Santoro from the 2015 Orcas Island Jazz Festival, where Lund says she “blew everyone away.”

“Not only does she bring a gorgeous voice but also a joyous spirit to her game,” said Lund.

Santoro hails originally from the interior state of Minas Gerais, birthplace of Clube da Esquina, a lush strain of late ’60s post-bossa nova music spearheaded by Milton Nascimento and Márcio Borges. Her lush, warm vocals and gentle rhythms, often accompanied by piano, reflect that influence, as well as her deep background in jazz, classical music, bossa nova and rock. Santoro cites Joni Mitchell as her ideal artist, though Elis Regina, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Gal Costa and Edith Piaf are also part of her musical pantheon.

Faquini is a Brazilian guitar player and singer who resides near Berkeley, California, where he was a member of the renowned Berkeley High School Jazz program. At the age of 16, his talent and love for music came to the attention of legendary Brazilian guitar maestro Guinga, who took him under his wing. In the few years since, Ian has become a respected player in the San Francisco Bay Area, demonstrating rare chordal technique and a special delicate touch. His last few summers have been spent in Brazil, where he has performed and studied with some of that country’s highest level players.

Busch is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups—as well as calypso, samba and Cuban jazz ensembles

“This is going to be a fun night to be in the audience and I know I will have a great time playing with these amazing musicians,” said Lund.
