San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

April 18: A San Juan Island woman accused of swiping merchandise from a Friday Harbor consignment store was detained by the Second Street shop owner and later arrested for shoplifting. The 32-year-old reportedly stole six clothing items that together cost $75.

April 22: A San Juan Island man was arrested for assault following an argument with his 15-year-old daughter that allegedly came to blows. The 49-year-old was taken into custody at a fundraising event at the fairgrounds in Friday Harbor at about 9:30 p.m.

– An Oakville, Wash. man was apprehended on an arrest warrant issued in King County in the wake of a late-night boating mishap near the mouth of Lopez Island’s Mackaye Harbor. The 60-year-old was among a group of people who reportedly abandoned ship and scrambled into a skiff after their sailboat struck an unidentified object in the water and became unseaworthy at about midnight. The man was taken into custody shortly after the group made it safely back to a boat ramp in the harbor.

April 24: A San Juan Island man faces fines and infractions after a neighbor narrowly escaped a mid-morning attack by seven of his dogs. The pack was bound together by a single chain and prowling the Terrace Drive neighborhood when a woman living nearby drew its attention and chased after her. She retreated off her deck and was able to get inside her home and shut a sliding glass door just as one of the dogs reportedly grabbed one of her pant legs with its teeth. In a related incident, an off-duty officer was forced to fire off a round from his revolver to scare a pair of the man’s dogs while investigating the disorder.

April 27: Local authorities shipped 255 pounds of discarded medication to the mainland to be destroyed following the most recent six-month roundup of unwanted medication. Expired or unwanted medication can be disposed of at local pharmacies or at the San Juan County Sheriff’s department.

May 1: Entirely naked and reportedly wielding a knife, an Orcas Island woman was disarmed, apprehended and arrested following an early afternoon altercation with deputies outside her Green Cow Lane home. The 22-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 1:30 p.m., was immediately shuttled by boat to a Skagit County hospital for evaluation. A neighbor reportedly notified authorities that the woman was outside her home, sitting naked in her car and behaving oddly, as if she were on drugs.

– A vending machine outside a Friday Harbor gift shop that crushes pennies and leaves a decorative imprint was roughed up by someone who tried to break into its coin slot. The extent of damage to the machine, situated on the wharf of Cannery Landing, outside Dockside Treasures, was unlisted. The penny crushing enterprise costs 50 cents a pop.

– A backpack, a chainsaw, a necklace with a gold cross and a bottle of prescription painkillers disappeared from a pickup in an apparent theft outside an Orcas Island home. The missing belongings, which include a bottle containing 50 tablets of Oxycodone, reportedly vanished from inside a pickup parked outside the Hemlock Lane home of a 25-year-old Orcas man.

May 2: A late-night altercation prompted the arrest of a Renton man accused of striking his girlfriend at a westside Orcas Island resort. The 32-year-old, who allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old girlfriend, was taken into custody at the Deer Harbor Resort at about 1 a.m.

May 5: A tip about a possible drunk driver prompted the arrest of a Bothell man for DUI following a late-afternoon traffic stop in the 200 block of Lovers Lane. The 22-year-old was pulled over at about 5:30 p.m., shortly after leaving Moran State Park. He was tracked down and then pulled over after park rangers notified authorities about a possible drunk driver who drove out of the park in pickup and in the direction of Eastsound.

– An Orcas Island man was slapped with a criminal citation for hauling an unsecured load following a dangerous mid-morning mishap in the 700 block of Orcas Road. The 33-year-old was hauling a rickety load on a flatbed truck when an old wooden cabinet fell off the truck and onto the roadway, and then struck the front end of a car in the oncoming lane. A piece of plywood from the cabinet reportedly impaled itself into the windshield of the oncoming car, causing shards of broken glass to strike the face of a 60-year-old man behind the wheel, who suffered minor injuries. The driver of the flatbed faces up to 90 days in jail and a fine of $250.

– Allegations of assault prompted the arrest an Orcas Island man accused of striking a girlfriend in an early morning altercation at the couple’s Enchanted Forest Road home. The 37-year-old was taken into custody at apartment the couple share shortly after 6 a.m., and then charged with fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor. He is also wanted on a pair of warrant for failing to appear in court on charges reckless driving, hit-and-run and DUI.

May 9: Excessive speed and a pair of warrants led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man following a mid-afternoon traffic stop in the 2,000 block of Olga Road. The 33-year-old, wanted for failure to appear on public nuisance and DUI charges, was pulled over shortly after 2 p.m. He was issued a criminal citation for driving with a suspended license and also ticketed for speeding.
