This past summer, Dick Staub, long-time broadcaster and now pastor of Orcas Island Community Church, launched KindlingsFest, a celebration of art and ideas that intersect with the spiritual.
The four-day series included lectures and discussions with leading thinkers on issues of contemporary importance, entertainment and live music. Last summer, the festival brought 300 international and island guests together on Orcas.
Now the community is invited to Kindlings WinterFest 09, a scaled down, lecture-only version of KindlingsFest.
Guest lecturer Os Guinness will talk about “Christian Faith for the 21st Century” during several lectures.
On Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., the topic will be “The Journey – a thinking person’s quest for meaning.” On Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m., Guinness will discuss “Survival of the Fastest – living sanely when life is fired point blank.” At 7 p.m. he will present “A World Safe for Diversity – living with our deepest differences in a world of exploding pluralism.” The series will finish on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. with “You Only Live Once – calling, the ultimate game plan for life.” All lectures are held at Orcas Island Community Church.
Guinness is a writer and speaker living in Northern Virginia. He is the co-founder of The Trinity Forum. Born in China during World War II, he remained there until 1951 when the Communists forced most foreigners to leave. Since then he has lived mostly in England, Switzerland, and the United States.
He did undergraduate studies at the University of London and postgraduate studies at University of Oxford, where he graduated with a D.Phil (Doctor in Philoshopy) in the social sciences from Oriel College.
