A new season of Saturday Ikebana classes at Emmanuel’s Old Parish Hall will begin April 30 and continue twice a month throughout spring, summer and early fall. Beginners are welcome, and no previous experience is necessary. Cost is $15 per session. The class is taught by Joan D. Stamm, the author of “Heaven and Earth are Flowers: Reflections on Ikebana and Buddhism,” Wisdom Publications (2010).
Students need to bring their own plant/flower material and clippers. Stamm will provide flower holders, water containers and extra flowers if needed. Classes start with a short talk, demonstration and centering meditation, then students practice their own arrangement while Joan gives individual instruction. Tea and sweets are served informally. The class runs from at 2 to 4 p.m.
Stamm has studied ikebana in Japan and Seattle and holds shihan, or authorization to teach, from the Saga School of Ikebana located in Kyoto. For pre-registration, e-mail Joan at jstamm@seanet.com, phone 376-1035, or visit her Web site at www.JoanDStamm.com.
