It’s a bird, it’s a plane: Kiwanis to host paper airplane contest

Airplane enthusiasts of all ages are invited to an afternoon of fun.

The Kiwanis Club of Orcas Island is hosting the 15th annual paper airplane contest on Saturday, March 13 at the Orcas High School gym.

Building and testing airplanes will start at 1 p.m. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. Kiwanis will provide all the materials necessary to build the airplanes, and instruction books will also be available. All airplanes must be built at the contest using the materials provided, although there is one exception: “The Most Beautiful Airplane” contest allows the airplane to be built at home. So let your imagination run wild.

There are three age groups: eight and younger, nine to 12, and 13 and older. In each age group there will be three competitions: distance, accuracy, and time aloft. There is also a special contest for all ages. Organizers say lots of prizes will be awarded.

Entry is free. Five sheets of Kiwanis paper will be given to each person entering, and extra paper is available. The contest is open to all ages and skill levels. People will be available to help contestants build the very best airplane.
