Islanders Peter Fromm and Emily Reed are sending a call out to artists to submit images of special “old island” scenes for the 2011 county fair display.
“Changes are part of life; they are all around, and within us,” said Fromm. “In San Juan County we see historic rural and small town views becoming suburban. The “Island Scenes” project is an effort to record images of what is here now which represent “old island” and what we hope will be here in the future.
“The Land Bank and San Juan Preservation Trust work to preserve special places,” said Reed. “It’s an avenue to get people to think about scenes that are special, and people will be less likely to cut down the trees [or make other changes].”
Artists of all ages and skills are asked to portray a scene which strikes them as “old island”:
Guidelines are: one image per person; any two dimensional medium is allowed (photography, oil, pastel, watercolor, finger painting, etc.); should be ready to hang, with a matted or framed size between 8″ x 10″ to 16″ x 20″; and include a description of the scene’s location.
The works will form a distinct display at the 2011 San Juan County Fair. There will be no jurying and no prizes, just the appreciation of fair-goers. Last year’s display had 20 entries and was “very well received,” according to Reed.
Deadlines
Artists should reserve their place by May 1. Artwork needs to be delivered to the main fair building by August 16, the day before the fair opens.
