In this month’s History Matinee, sponsored by the Orcas Island Historical Society, featured speaker Joyce Burghardt will tell stories and answer questions about days gone by at 3 p.m. on Sunday June 17 in the Lundeen Room at Orcas Senior Center.
Burghardt came to the island in 1949 with her husband Galen and purchased the Crescent Beach Resort, a series of small cabins built in 1917 that stood along the north side of Crescent Beach Road. The infamous Columbus Day storm of 1962 put an end to that business when all but two of the cabins were swept away.
Burghardt and her family then moved to Seattle where she earned a master’s degree in human resource management and
held several high level management positions.
After retirement they resumed their life on Orcas once again and were involved with the Orcas Island Yacht Club, Eastsound Water Users Association, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Eastsound Planning and Review Committee, among other groups.
The History Matinee’s take place on the third Sunday of every month, and admission is by donation at the door.
