Hapless hoax, heightened heists, ornery omnivore | San Juan County Sheriff’s Office

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Dec. 27

• Orcas deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident. After completing an investigation, the suspect was found, arrested, and taken to Friday Harbor.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a fraud complaint where a person had been tricked into mailing $5,000 cash to someone claiming to be an employee of PayPal.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the registration had expired in 2022, and the occupants were not wearing safety belts. The driver and passengers were issued multiple citations.

Dec. 28

• A San Juan deputy took a report of a hit-and-run collision. The reporting party said a vehicle had contact with theirs while at South Beach, with minimal damage. No identifying information was available for the other party.

• A deputy took a report of theft on San Juan. There was no information about the suspect, and no leads are likely.

• On Lopez, a motorist received a citation for driving 20 mph over the speed limit on Mud Bay Road.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a request for a welfare check. The person said they were fine and refused offers of assistance.

Dec. 30

• A Lopez resident requested assistance releasing an angry raccoon from a live trap; they were referred to Wolf Hollow.

• A deputy was dispatched to a welfare check in Friday Harbor. The person was requesting a check of a minor child visiting with their ex-spouse. The child was contacted, and there were no problems.

• When San Juan deputies responded to a report of an unresponsive person, they found the person had passed away. The family was notified, and a report was completed.

• Lopez deputies documented a report of a residential burglary.

Dec. 31

•A deputy on San Juan was contacted about a missing person, an adult family member, who had left the residence in a vehicle. The vehicle was located, but the person was not with the vehicle.

• An Orcas deputy received a lost property complaint.

• A Friday Harbor male went to the residence of his estranged wife, violating a domestic violence protection order. The suspect left the area before the arrival of law enforcement and had not been located at the time of the report. The case is being referred to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

• Someone on San Juan abandoned a vehicle on Douglas Road that was partially blocking a travel lane. Deputies impounded the vehicle and documented the incident.

Jan. 1

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a citizen assist.

• On Orcas, a deputy responded to a domestic incident and determined no crime had been committed.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a suspicious bicycle on the side of the road. The bicycle did not appear to be in a condition to be ridden and also appeared to have been abandoned on the side of the road. Deputies collected the bicycle as found property.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an order violation callback.

Jan. 2

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a theft of a parcel from a mailbox that had occurred the week prior. Law Enforcement noticed an uptick in package thefts from mailboxes on the island and encourages residents to be diligent about collecting their mail regularly and reporting suspicious activity.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of harassment/trespassing. After speaking with the involved parties, the person who reported the incident decided that they would seek a no-contact order rather than have the individual arrested for trespassing.
