Graffiti crops up on Orcas

For the second time in three years, an Orcas Island Cemetery has been vandalized.

Sergeant Steve Vierthaler said unknown culprit(s) used white house paint to inscribe the words “HEVS” “RIP” “Only Smok’n” and “Pigs” on the Woodlawn Cemetery rock wall and the old barn on Orcas Road that is decorated by the senior class each year.

“We’re upset, since we had that wall re-done a couple of years ago, and it was expensive,” said cemetery district commissioner Pierrette Guimond. “I don’t know how difficult it will be for us to clean this up.”

Woodlawn was vandalized three years ago over Memorial Day weekend, when unknown persons burned flags placed by the American Legion on the gravesites of veterans and replaced them with hand-drawn swastika signs. After the legion dropped off new flags at the cemetery, they were again removed and replaced with swastika flags. Despite a $10,000 reward, the vandals were never apprehended.
