Getting by with a little help from Orcas friends

When Sherry Vinson called wood shop teacher Mark Padbury with an idea for a project, he immediately said yes.

It took three class periods for high school students Daniel Janssen and Willie Eagan to build an ADA-compliant ramp for Vinson, and they installed it last week at her home.

“Designing it was the biggest challenge for them,” Padbury said. “They researched the code for ADA criteria, and applied the code to solving this problem.”

The materials were paid for by Vinson, but the teens donated their time. Janssen says it was a fun project, and both boys agree that it was rewarding.

“They have received a certain amount of joy in adding that five inches for Sherry,” Padbury said.

Vinson, who uses a walker, will now be able to easily navigate from her kitchen to the garage, which is separated by a small ledge.

“This is fantastic,” Vinson said. “It is a huge help.”

Eagan and Janssen even gave their ramp a final stamp of approval: it’s emblazoned with a Viking Woodworks, Orcas Island emblem.

“This is the first ramp we’ve done, but maybe we’ll be ramps r’ us now,” Padbury said.
