Around 30 students from middle and high school gathered at The Funhouse Commons for a showing of the powerful documentary “Miss Representation” on Sept. 21.

The film, directed by Jennifer Siebel, examines the issue of prominent and successful women being under represented in the mainstream media.

The movie emphasizes the need for teens to think critically about how media is portraying women and girls in leadership roles and how stereotypes of masculinity and femininity limit both boys and girls.

After the movie there was a meaningful discussion, lead by Funhouse Commons staff. Teens discussed how these issues affect their lives and different ways to get involved.

Teens enjoyed local wood-fired pizza before the start of the movie – made to order by Ani Sparks. All of the evening’s activities were supported by a generous local donor.

Since 2000, The Funhouse Commons Teen Night program has been open every Friday and Saturday night to provide a lively, safe, and supervised place for teens to hang out.

Under the direction of new program manager Merrick Parnell, The Funhouse Commons has been implementing lots more positive, engaging programming during Teen Night.
