In the interest of giving back to the community, a group of clean and sober islanders have planned a dance for all ages at Oddfellows Hall on Saturday, May 26, 8:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.

The idea came to me that there are not enough activities for people who may want to be in a sober environment,” said Sharon Collins, dance creator and organizer. “I wanted to give back to the community that has supported me and others who have struggled with addiction – to say thank you. Sometimes people think that those who do not drink or use drugs don’t have any fun, but we know better.”

The recovery community on Orcas Island is surprisingly large and supportive, Collins added.

The dance is not an AA-sponsored event.

We hope by conducting this dance, we will make others more aware of clean and sober options,” Collins said.

In addition, the committee organizing the dance wanted to provide an activity for all ages, so that families, teens, seniors and guests from off-island could participate. Donations to cover costs of the dance will be accepted at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The group has gathered favorite dance tunes from many genres and time periods including jazz, disco, country, pop and even a few surprise tunes. “The sound system at Oddfellows is great,” said Collins. The system has been gradually upgraded the past couple of years, according to Jay Kimball, Oddfellows building manager.

Refreshments will be for sale at the dance for a nominal fee, and any proceeds from the dance will be turned over to community supporters of the event.

Community supporters include Full Circle Counseling, DVSAS, Orcas Medical Center, San Juan County Human Services, Orcas Island Family Medicine, OIPP, Island Market, Office Cupboard, Mary Nash (LMFT), Orcas Family Health Center, Rachel Newcombe (LICSW), Chimayo/Sazio and Orcas Animal Protection Society.
