Ferries warns of windy weather service impacts

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for San Juan County that will be in effect from 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.

The wind will reach gusts up to 50 mph with the strongest speeds expected along the coastline. Peak winds are predicted for Thursday afternoon.

Washington State Ferries passengers are advised to prepare for possible sailing delays for both days.

Weather service officials aren’t predicting this windstorm to be on par with the one from December. However, passengers should still plan accordingly.

Customers may experience delays on this route while ferries take alternate storm routes along the Anacortes to San Juan Island.

Also, vessels may not be loaded to full capacity to better stabilize them, while also operating at slower speeds.

Travelers should consider giving themselves extra time to get where they’re going. For real-time travel information on their mobile device, passengers can use the WSDOT app, or follow the Washington State Ferries Twitter feed.

WSF will continue to monitor the situation and send out updates. Thank you in advance for your patience.
