Fall literature class reads East of Eden

John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” will be the subject of the Fall Literature class.

John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” will be the subject of the Fall Literature class.

Organizer JoEllen Moldoff says, “We will assume that people will have read enough of the book that conversation on any given day may range wherever the text takes us. Our preliminary plan is to begin, in the first two sessions, with some useful biographical, biblical, and historical context, and to focus in the following weeks on various characters (an approach that this book in particular seems to cry out for). “We’ll devote the last session to an assessment of the themes and artistry of the book as a whole.”

Darvill’s Bookstore will have copies of the Penguin Classics edition.

The class will take place on Wednesdays, from Oct. 1 to Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the parish hall of Emmanuel Church.

Registration is at the Library. A $20 fee at the first session will be collected.
