A former Lopez Island man convicted two years ago of having sex with a 14-year-old girl was sentenced to two months in jail for failing to register as a sex offender following his release from prison late last year.

On Jan. 9, Jason Michael Schible, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of failing to register as a sex offender, a Class C felony. He was sentenced to two months in jail and 12 months probation, and ordered to pay $800 in fines and fees.

According court documents, Schible, who was released from prison Oct. 2 after serving a 366-day sentence, had initially contacted local authorities after returning to San Juan Island. However, officers soon discovered the address he gave as his local residence – the Orca Inn on Mullis Street – turned out to be false and that he was not registered as a guest.

In a subsequent call to authorities, Schible claimed to be homeless and of resorting to “couch surfing” with friends for a place to stay. Though he had provided a telephone number, messages left by local authorities were not returned and a $10,000 warrant was issued for his arrest. Schible was apprehended and then transferred to the state penitentiary in Monroe pending trial. He was credited with having served 52 days for time spent in custody while awaiting trial.
