Friday, June 19

Summer solstice dance: At the Odd Fellows Hall with live musicians from San Juan Island. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to a local charity. Potluck is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the dance is from 7 to 10 p.m.

Friday, June 19 & Saturday, June 20

“Waiting For MacArthur”: The Actors Theater of Orcas Island play opens on Friday, June 19 at the Grange with additional performances on Saturday, June 20, Friday, June 26, Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at Darvill’s Bookstore or at the door.

Martin Lund’s One World Music Festival: jazz-based musical variety show to raise funds for The Funhouse. Reception at 6:30 p.m., performances at 7:30 p.m. Call the Orcas Center box office at 376-ACT1 to buy tickets, which are $24, $20 (Orcas Center members), and $12 (students).

Saturday, June 20

“Botany of Mount Constitution II – The Summits”: Led by Thor Hansen, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to register call 378-3646. Any skill level is welcome; no prerequisite.

Kiwanis pancake breakfast: At the Island Hardware Anniversary sale from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., includes all the pancakes you can eat, little pig sausages, scrambled eggs, orange juice, and coffee. Adults are $6, kids under 12 are $3.

Writers’ Roundtable: From 1 to 3 p.m. at the Orcas Library. All are welcome. This month’s Roundtable will be led by Jill McCabe Johnson, Director of Artsmit. The group will look at pictures evocative of homecomings and departures, then write and share whatever poetry and prose the images inspire. Pictures will be provided, though writers are welcome to bring favorite images.

Solstice parade and celebration: Noon, Eastsound. Colorful foot parade to celebrate summer. Entertainment follows at the Stage on the Green. For more info call 376-5458.

Off-Leash party: To celebrate the Orcas Off-Leash area, there will be a “Paw-ty” from 1 to 4 p.m. The day includes pet portraits, dog agility demonstrations, games for dogs and people, prizes, a raffle, information about pet care on Orcas.

Sunday, June 21

Sitar concert: Sitar masters Pandit Shivnath Mishra and his son Deobrat will perform at Odd Fellows Hall, 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets from www.brownpapertickets.com are $16 or $20 at the door.

Moran Centennial: The “Moran Centennial House Tour” will feature four Robert Moran built homes; concludes with a Centennial Celebration at 4 p.m. in the Moran Mansion at Rosario. The event is a fundraiser for the Orcas Island Historical Society. Tickets at Darvill’s, the Orcas Island Historical Museum, and Rosario Resort’s front desk; $20 adult, $10 student, and children under 12 are free with an adult.

T’ai Chi: Joan Roulac will offer a free introductory T’ai Chi class at the Orcas Senior Center from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, June 23

Health talk: Free health talk by Dr. Atma Vemulakonda, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington, on emerging treatments for macular degeneration. Sponsored by Orcas Medical Center Foundation, starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center.

Wednesday, June 24

Outdoor Volleyball: Teams are now forming for a competitive 4-on-4 grass volleyball league. Games will take place on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. beginning June 24. To get in on the action call Orcas Rec at 376-5339 or Hank Date at 376-5376. Cost to register is $15 per person. Also, beginning Sunday, June 21 there will be weekly drop-in volleyball in Eastsound Waterfront Park at 2 p.m.
