MONDAY – ONGOING

Duplicate Bridge: Every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Longhouse in Eastsound duplicate bridge. For details call 376-2797 or 376-8278.

Chess: The Orcas Chess Club meets at Eastsound Library at 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Al-Anon: The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

TUESDAY – ONGOING

Open mic: The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

WEDNESDAY – ONGOING

Theosophical Library: Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night: A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starts between 7 and 8 p.m.

SATURDAY – ONGOING

Ping Pong: The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Poetry read: Poet and teacher Alice Derry will be the featured poet in Orcas Island’s celebration of National Poetry Month. She will read her at 7 p.m. in the Orcas Library, and will teach a workshop the following day.

Cabaret in the Air: A fun and mysterious variety show that features local dancers, singers, and a musician will be performed in the OffCenter Stage at Orcas Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be bought online at www.orcascenter.org or at the Orcas Center Box office, 376-2281 ext. 1.

Hand drumming at Indralaya: This workshop provides gentle, yet powerful guidance to help unleash the rhythm in you. For all skill levels. Please bring a hand drum and a small percussion instrument. Jill Sager will lead the workshop. For more info call 376-4526 or visit www.indralaya.org.

Saturday, April 25

Bill Yarlott Fishing Derby: At Cascade Lake starting at daybreak. The derby is open to children too young to have a fishing license, those 15 years of age and younger. There is no entry fee required. For a donation, the traditional cornbread, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and Yarlott’s chili will be served.

Eat-Read-Talk 2009: A Celebration of African-American Literature. An evening of food and conversation as the group examines the novel, “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest Gaines. Barbara Lewis and Michele Griskey will lead this class, which will meet at Emmanuel Church from 5:30-8:30. Sponsored by the Orcas Island Writers Festival. Teens and the Law: Parents, students ages 10 to 18, and the public are invited to a community forum at 6:30 p.m. in the Orcas Middle School Cafeteria.

Kindergarten screening: All children entering kindergarten are encouraged to attend a screening that covers the developmental areas of fine and gross motor development, concept skills, hearing, vision, and speech and language development. Friday, April 24

Community benefit dance: Lopez’s own Caribbean band comes out of winter hibernation to help raise money for the Fisher and Doherty families. Featuring Son del Tiempo and other groups. 7:00 p.m., Lopez Center. Admission by donation.

Saturday, April 25

Piano and cello concert: Tanya Stambuk and Kevin Krentz of the Finisterra Piano Trio will play the music of Haydn, Brahms, Debussy and Chopin at Lopez Center. Adults $15, Youth $10, available from the community center office and online.

Sunday, April 26

Lions Club Pancake Brunch: Lopez School Multi-purpose room. Tickets $5 single/ $10 family. Tickets on sale at Lopez Market Friday and Saturday. All proceeds benefit Lopez Island community projects.
