Elwha’s return to service delayed

The 144-car ferry Elwha’s return to the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route was delayed on Aug. 15 when the vessel experienced problems with the propulsion control system on its way to Anacortes. It was returned to WSDOT’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility for evaluation and repair. The cause of the problem was not known at the time.

The 144-car ferry Elwha’s return to the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route was delayed on Aug. 15 when the vessel experienced problems with the propulsion control system on its way to Anacortes. It was returned to WSDOT’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility for evaluation and repair. The cause of the problem was not known at the time.

The ferry completed sea trials on Aug. 15. The Elwha was removed from service on Aug. 6 because of a problem with the propulsion control cooling system, which has now been repaired.

“We apologize for the inconvenience our customers experienced because of the problem with the Elwha,” said David Moseley, Assistant Secretary, Ferries Division. “Our repair crews worked hard to return the vessel to service as quickly as possible. I want to thank our San Juan Islands customers for their patience.”

The 90-car Sealth and the Kaleentan continued to fill in until the Sealth was returned to service.
