A diver was reported missing to the United States Coast Guard at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday while diving off the north side of Orcas Island. The missing diver is identified as Michael Scherner, 40, of Bellingham, Wash.

San Juan County’s Dive/Rescue Team responded to the area and conducted an extensive underwater search, as well as interviewed other divers present. The response from the Sheriff’s office via the patrol vessel Guardian began at approximately 4 p.m. and was terminated at 8:30 p.m. Divers returned to the area Thursday to conduct a limited search of an area that was not searched last night.

Scherner was described as an experienced diver and is believed to have been a diver in the U.S. Navy.

Family members were notified of his disappearance by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
