Dishes missing from Madrona Club cabinet

It is the case of the missing historic dessert dishes at the Madrona Club that have club members seeking help from the public.

A dozen dessert cups, green dessert plates and a few other items are missing from the Madrona Room, where the club has its monthly meetings.

“We think the cabinet was left open and people just assumed they belonged to the Orcas Center,” Madrona Club President Jean Dickerson said.

But they don’t. They belong to the club, who has met there since giving the Orcas Center Committee their land and clubhouse to sell to help get the center built. The Madrona Room is now their clubhouse in addition to housing other community functions.

The club, one of the oldest on the island, was originally started to get women out of the farmhouses for education and enlightenment, musical events, talks and charity work. Today the club provides annual scholarships for high school students and participates in community projects such as donating plants to the center’s landscaping efforts.

“We work really hard to help maintain a thread of historical awareness on the island,” Dickerson said.

And the glassware is part of the club’s history. If anyone has seen the dishes or has them, call Dickerson at 376-4433.
