Crypto crime, gang graffiti and a radio ruckus | SJC Sheriff’s log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Oct. 1

• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of a vessel moored overnight at a County dock. The deputy tagged the vessel with a warning sticker. Three days later, the vessel had still not been moved. The operator was issued an infraction.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of littering. The reporting party advised they had no suspect information, but would place surveillance cameras in the area to capture the suspect should the behavior continue.

• An Orcas Island Deputy stopped a vehicle on Lovers Lane that was speeding 44 mph in a posted 25 mph zone. The driver was issued an infraction for speed and a verbal warning for failing to sign vehicle registration.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute. One male was arrested for assault, trespass and malicious mischief. The arrestee was found in possession of equipment that he appeared to have been using to disrupt Sheriff’s Office radio traffic over the previous several months.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a traffic incident. Two teenage drivers were reported speeding and passing vehicles. The deputy contacted the teens, gave them a warning for their unsafe behavior and called their parents.

Oct. 2

• A San Juan deputy observed that an inmate had called a protected person several times. The deputy’s report was forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for 95 counts of a domestic violence protection order violation.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of a stolen chainsaw. The caller notified the deputy a few hours later that they had found the chainsaw, which had been accidentally misplaced.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a motor vehicle collision, a hit-and-run in Eastsound. With help from citizens in identifying the suspect, an arrest was made for hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a theft incident in the Eastsound area. The victim discovered missing collector’s items after hiring a supposed friend to clean their recreational vehicle. The incident was documented, and an investigation is underway.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver stated that they were lost in thought, and an infraction was issued.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a burglary incident at a business in Deer Harbor. Photographs were taken, and the incident was documented.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for expired registration over two months, window tint and a defective windshield. The driver was issued infractions for expired registration and no insurance.

• A deputy on Orcas Island responded to a mental health crisis involving a juvenile. The situation was de-escalated. The deputy cleared with an informational report.

Oct. 3

• An Orcas Island deputy conducted a traffic stop for a driver who was speeding 56 mph in a posted 35 mph speed zone on Olga Road. The driver was subsequently issued an infraction for speed.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a fraud incident in the Eastsound area. The victim was involved in an online cryptocurrency scam.

• A San Juan deputy conducted a welfare check of a child. The child was found to be well cared for, and nothing of concern was noted.

• A deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run in the Friday Harbor area. The deputy arrived and contacted a witness. The deputy was able to identify the people involved. A report was taken.

• A deputy was contacted about an agency assist. The deputy was contacted by another agency about an ongoing issue. The deputy provided information toward a solution.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for window tint. The driver was issued infractions for window tint and failure to notify the Department of Licensing of an address change.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a residential burglary incident. The deputy later learned that it was a civil dispute.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic. One person was arrested for assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence, assault in the fourth degree and malicious mischief in the third degree.

Oct. 4

• Deputies on Orcas Island responded to a report of a person in crisis. The person was taken into protective custody and delivered to the emergency room at Peace Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor.

• A San Juan deputy located gang-affiliated graffiti at Jackson Beach Park. No suspect information exists, and there are no likely leads.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle as the owner did not have a valid license, and the vehicle had dark window tint. The driver was issued infractions for no valid license with ID and window tint. Warnings were also given.

Oct. 5

• A deputy on Orcas Island conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for no valid operator license with valid ID, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and operating a vehicle without a current and proper license plate.

Oct. 6

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a trespassing incident at a business in downtown Eastsound. The suspect was subsequently arrested for trespassing in the second degree, and the incident was documented.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a noise complaint. All involved parties were contacted.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report from Adult Protective Services. An informational report was completed.

• A deputy on San Juan Island received a report of a theft. Currently, there are no suspects.

Oct. 7

• Deputies on Lopez Island were dispatched to a possible protection order violation. The deputies completed an investigation and determined that a violation of the order had occurred. The suspect was later located and arrested.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a trespassing incident at a business in the Eastsound area. The deputy spoke with the business owner and provided resources to help with a potential ongoing issue. The incident was documented.
