Craft event for kids to make holiday gifts

Orcas Open Arts will be hosting its second Annual Kids’ Holiday Craft Event on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 4 to 6 pm in the public school cafeteria. Admission is free and the event is open to all Orcas children ages 5 through 12. There will be several craftmaking “stations,” where children, assisted by volunteers, can make recycled wool felt decorations and pouches, bead and wooden spool ornaments, decoupage pins and frames, and hand-stamped gift bags and cards.

Orcas kids will once again have the opportunity to create fabulous and festive crafts for holiday gifts and decorations.

Orcas Open Arts is pleased to be producing this craft happening for the children of Orcas again this year. The organization raises funds and administers an Artists-in-the-School program for Orcas Elementary and Middle Schools, which lack the funding for art teachers. OOA staged the Holiday Craft Event for the first time in 2010 to give island children the chance to create homemade gifts for family and friends.

“The response was terrific,” said Andrea Cohen, OOA board member. “We had a cafeteria full of kids and parents working together, making beautiful things, with a fabulous group of volunteer helpers. It was a warm and cheerful holiday atmosphere.”
