The County Council approved a street vendor ordinance at Tuesday’s session.
The council sees it as an interim step, and will consider banning sidewalk stands entirely on all public rights of way.
The proposed ordinance requires non-exempt vendors using public places in Eastsound to obtain a six-month use permit from the county (which would be free) and pay a daily fee of $50. The fine for an infraction is $250. If a vendor is cited for a violation, and he or she does not leave the premises after an hour, another $250 fine will be issued.
The ordinance will take effect on August 1.
