The San Juan County Charter Review Commission will convene its first meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 in the County Council Chambers at 55 Second Avenue in Friday Harbor.
The county’s charter calls for a review by an elected Charter Review Commission after five full years of operation under the new form of government, and at least every ten years thereafter. The county’s home rule charter was adopted by voters in 2005 and put in place in 2006.
At its first meeting, the commission’s members will select officers, be briefed on its mission and the resources they will have available, and establish ground rules for the commission’s work.
The 21 members of the Charter Review Commission were elected in the Nov. 8 election. Membership slots were allotted by council district, with population factored in. Ten members are from districts on San Juan Island, seven from Orcas, and four from Lopez/Shaw.
