Next week, the Chamber of Commerce will gather public input from commercial businesses, non-profits, and individuals about the proposed a-board sign ordinance in Eastsound.

Lance Evans of the Chamber of Commerce will host an Orcas Business Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Eastsound fire hall.

Although there is no current sign ordinance, the forum will gather input on a-board signs, also referred to as “sandwich board signs.”

The discussion will inform the Eastsound Planning and Review Committee on what the problems are with this type of signage and what solutions might be found.

Issues of a-board signs include clutter, non-profit versus commercial business use, navigation for motorized and non-motorized traffic, location, quantity, permanence, location, and adoption of a standard of allowed sizes, colors, and fonts.

San Juan County senior planner Colin Maycock said at an Eastsound Planning and Review Committee meeting on Thursday, Oct. 1 that the sign ordinance is his next big project and the issue should move forward before 2010.
