Due to higher costs and community feedback, the Orcas Chamber July 4th fireworks show will not happen this year.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” said Chamber Director Carey Eskridge. “We know how beloved the fireworks tradition has been, but we also heard clearly from our members that the cost — tens of thousands of dollars for just a few minutes of spectacle — could be better invested elsewhere to benefit local businesses and the community.”
Barring a brief break during COVID, the fireworks show has lit up the skies over Fishing Bay for decades. Previous displays have been $15,000. This year, the quote was $35,000.
The chamber contacted its membership earlier this year, seeking donations to help fund the annual display. The response was muted, and after open conversations and careful consideration, the board agreed that the fireworks could no longer be justified as the best use of resources.
“The Chamber of Commerce simply cannot cover the cost of the fireworks,” said Board President Pete Moe. “We went out to our membership and asked if they were ready to pay for it, and the level of support we needed was not there.”
Instead, the Chamber is focusing its energy on the Third Annual Community Picnic and 5K Fun Run, which will again occur on the Village Green in Eastsound on Friday, July 4. Eskridge says this year’s event promises to be the “biggest and most family-friendly celebration yet,” with participation from local organizations.
Last year’s picnic drew more than 1,000 attendees throughout the day. This year, attendees can look forward to the return of the always-popular cake walk, chili cook-off and pie baking contest along with new kids activities, an expanded lineup of local food and market vendors, and more.
Headlining the picnic is Zoso – The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience, a world-renowned tribute band that has been rocking audiences since 1995. Known for incredible musicianship and authentic performances, Zoso brings the energy and spirit of Led Zeppelin to life on stage. Local and regional acts will precede Zoso’s show.
“The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce extends its warmest wishes for a joyful and safe Fourth of July to all and invites the community to come together for a day of celebration that truly reflects the heart and soul of our island home,” Eskridge said.
