The Arts Education and Enrichment Committee of the Olga Strawberry Council has announced that registration is still open for two workshops being led by popular Cedar bark basket-maker Vickie Era.
Originally from the village of Katmai but spending most of her childhood in Hawaii and Guam, Era’s style is a blend of Northwest, Alaska and Polynesian using plaiting, twining, fine weaving and coiling.
A two-day workshop for those familiar with the craft but wishing to take it further or learn some new techniques in design and materials will be held on Saturday, April 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 18 from noon to 4 p.m. For those less familiar with the art of basket-making, a beginning workshop delving into preparing materials and making a simple but functional basket will be held on Saturday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday April 18 from noon to 4 p.m. All materials are supplied. The workshops will be held both weekends in the Benson Room of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Eastsound.
Call Madie Murray at 376-3064 to reserve a spot, as each workshop is limited to 10 participants.
