Sept. 7: Someone used spray paint to deface the retaining wall of an Orcas Island cemetery in an apparent act of vandalism. The letters H.E.V.S. and R.I.P, as well as a heart-shaped symbol, were spray-painted onto the side of the wall that faces West Beach Road sometime in the past three days; estimated cost of the cleanup is $300.

Sept. 20: A Shaw Island woman suffered injuries to her hips and was airlifted off-island for treatment following a single-car collision near the ferry landing on Shaw. The 63-year-old reportedly was trying to wipe condensation off her windshield of her pickup when she veered off the road, plummeted down an embankment and crashed into a tree at about 10 p.m.

Sept. 21: Excessive speed prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man for driving with a suspended license and for driving without a court-ordered interlock device following a mid-afternoon traffic stop near the intersection of Bromley Drive and Olga Road. The 34-year-old, taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m., was ticketed also for driving without insurance and for speeding.

Sept. 24: A tip from a fellow ferry rider led to the arrest of a Seattle man on alcohol-related charges after an early-evening ferry arrived on Orcas Island. The 41-year-old, reportedly behind the wheel of his SUV at the time the ferry came into dock, was taken into custody at about 8:30 p.m. for being in physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated.

Sept. 25: A Lopez Island man who claims to have been distracted by animals in a field reportedly broke his collarbone and injured a shoulder after losing control of his motorcycle and landing in a ditch near the intersection of Hummel Lake and Port Stanley roads at about 3 p.m. The 64-year-old was ticketed for driving without a motorcycle endorsement.

A San Juan Island woman was arrested for DUI and for driving with a suspended license following a late-night single-car collision in the 2000 block of Bailer Hill Road. The 67-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m., reportedly drove her 4-door sedan off the road and into a ditch.

Sept. 21: An Orcas Island man’s dog went missing while the two were hiking in Crow Valley near Turtleback Mountain, and his mother believes someone shot and killed it. The 27-year-old reportedly heard three gunshots about 10 minutes after dog, a miniature Australian Shepherd, ran off and failed to return. His mother reportedly knows someone who lives in the area that claims to know who shot it.

Sept. 26: A 49-year Lopez Island man suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation when his 40-year-old sailboat caught fire while moored at a marina in Fisherman Bay. The fire, which broke out shortly after midnight, is believed to have caused by either a explosion or a fuel fire.

An Orcas Island woman with a history of allowing her dogs to roam free got public-nuisance ticket number four after her Boston Terriers reportedly attacked a neighbor’s cat and then chased it up a tree. The 49-year-old claims the dogs apparently got out when someone left for work from her home on Melody Lane.

Sept. 29: A San Juan Island woman was arrested for DUI following a late-night single-car collision near the intersection of Roche Harbor Road and Westcott Drive. The 41-year-old, who reportedly drove into a ditch while attempting a left turn, was taken into custody at about 12:30 a.m.

Oct. 2: A Lopez Island woman claims her mother’s boyfriend hit her in the face during a late-night get together at a friend’s home on Dragon Run Lane. The 20-year-old reportedly was treated for pain and swelling on the left side of her face and eye. She and the home owner, and the 49-year-old alleged assailant were questioned by authorities, but at that time no arrests were made.

Oct. 1: A late-night confrontation between several party-goers and a team of deputies led to the arrest of two men for trespassing and noise infractions in the wake of a riotous celebration at Roche Harbor Resort. The two men, unidentified in the incident report, were taken into custody at about 1:30 a.m. after they reportedly ignored warnings and went back to the cottage where they had been evicted. The revelers reportedly ignored three requests by resort staff to quiet down and then peppered the first officer on the scene with profanity before backup arrived.
