The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Aug. 21

• An unwanted person was found in the Friday Harbor post office. They were later told they must leave and risk a trespassing charge if they returned.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a complaint of a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle with the music blaring. The person was identified and given a warning for violating the San Juan County Noise Ordinance.

• An Orcas deputy met with a person at the substation regarding family issues. A report was taken.

• A deputy on Lopez picked up a debit card that had been found and turned into a local business. After contacting the national bank that issued the card, the card was shredded at the request of the bank.

• A deputy responded to an unknown trouble call in the Olga area. The caller was found to be alright, and the call was accidental.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a call regarding a person who was trespassing. The subject was arrested for criminal trespass in the 1st degree.

• San Juan deputies responded to a possible domestic assault which became a welfare check. The deputies were able to speak with the person and concluded that no crime had occurred.

• On Lopez, a deputy responded to a call regarding the use of a counterfeit $100 bill. The investigation is ongoing.

Aug. 22

• A deputy on San Juan stopped a driver for operating a motor vehicle on a suspended driver’s license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license — 3rd degree, and was issued a citation for not having insurance and for failing to sign a vehicle registration.

• An Orcas deputy conducted a traffic stop near Eastsound. The driver was given a citation for an expired vehicle registration more than two months and a warning for not having current proof of insurance in the vehicle.

•A deputy on San Juan arrested a person for multiple outstanding warrants.

• In Friday Harbor, a deputy was dispatched to a reported theft. There are no suspects at this time.

• A small plane made an emergency landing at the Lopez airport following a mechanical malfunction. The pilot was not injured, and an informational report was completed.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a call about a theft at The Exchange. A report was taken and there are no suspects at this time.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor issued a motorcycle rider a citation for negligent driving in the 2nd degree. The rider was also warned for not having a motorcycle endorsement.

• A deputy on Lopez stopped the driver of a vehicle for driving left of center. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Aug. 23

• A deputy was dispatched to a report of a disorderly person at the Port of Friday Harbor. The subject was told to return to his boat.

• A Lopez resident requested assistance with a sick deer on their property. The deer expired shortly before the deputy arrived. The deputy and resident moved the carcass to a remote area of the property.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a theft. The incident was documented.

• A deputy responded to a citizen dispute near Eastsound. A report was taken.

• A San Juan deputy took a report and documented an incident of vandalism.

• A former Lopez resident called to report the theft of a firearm that occurred in 2013. There is no suspect information, and a report was completed.

• In Friday Harbor, a person reported receiving a check in the mail and suspected it to be fraudulent. The caller was advised not to cash the check and to contact the Washington state attorney general’s office.

• While on marine patrol, the San Juan County Sheriff’s office discovered a sunken vessel. There were many items floating in the water nearby including a kayak and skiff, which were recovered. The United States Coast Guard was notified and they deployed assets including a helicopter and patrol vessel to assist in the search for the operator.

• A deputy on Lopez was called to check on a trespassing situation on the Odlin Park trail. Deputies checked the area the day before but found the involved party was gone and had not returned.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor issued parking citations to three vessels for not having the correct permits. One vessel was issued citations for an expired registration and for not displaying their registration correctly.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a suspicious circumstance in which a person appeared to be passed out in a vehicle. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the conscious person. Drug paraphernalia was in plain view. The subject was arrested and drugs were located on his person. The suspect was taken off island and booked into the county jail in Friday Harbor.

• A deputy spoke with a Lopez resident regarding a threats complaint.

• A Friday Harbor deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a theft. The suspect was identified and the stolen property recovered.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of a missing juvenile in Moran State Park. Park rangers, Orcas Fire/Search and Rescue personnel and members of the public conducted a search. The juvenile was located and reunited with family.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor stopped the driver of a vehicle for a defective headlight. The driver was issued a citation for not having insurance.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for an expired registration. The driver was issued a citation for an expired registration more than two months.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor responded to a report of an order violation. After investigating, the deputy concluded that no violation occurred.

Aug. 24

• Deputies responded to a report of an assault at a business in Friday Harbor. The suspect fled the scene and a description was given by witnesses. The investigation is ongoing.

• San Juan deputies responded to a non-reportable collision. Information was exchanged between the involved parties.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a verbal disturbance called in by an uninvolved party. No crime had occurred.

• Car keys and a wallet were turned over to a Lopez deputy. The owner was located and reunited with their belongings.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for speeding 47 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A speeding driver on San Juan was stopped and issued a citation for traveling 51 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a citation for speeding, 49 mph in a 35 mph zone.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for driving 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. The driver was issued a citation for speeding.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a speeding citation for driving 41 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a warning for failing to dim their headlights.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and received a citation for speeding 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A traffic stop on Orcas resulted in the driver receiving a warning for not having his taillights turned on.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a citation for speeding, 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Aug. 25

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of vandalism and documented the incident.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a vehicle prowl that happened earlier in the week near the ferry landing.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a driver-under-the-influence hit and run. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence, for a hit and run and was issued a citation for not wearing a seat belt and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

• Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the Eastsound area. Upon investigation it was determined that no crime had been committed.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a welfare check. All the involved parties were contacted, and a report was made.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of a possible suicidal person.

• A traffic stop on Orcas resulted in the driver receiving a warning for lane travel and for crossing the centerline.

• A home alarm prompted deputies on Orcas to check a residence. No signs of forced entry were found and the call was cleared as unfounded.

Aug. 26

• A citizen on San Juan turned himself in to the sheriff’s office on an outstanding warrant for assault – 3rd degree. The citizen was booked into the jail on his warrant.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a domestic incident. The incident was verbal only and it was determined no crime had occurred.

• A deputy responded to a motor vehicle accident in the Eastsound area. There were no injuries and, after the investigation, both vehicles were able to drive away.

• Deputies on San Juan responded to a report of a disorderly person. The person was arrested for disorderly conduct and issued a citation for having an open alcohol container.

• Deputies were contacted about a theft in the San Juan area.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted an area check at Madrona Point, which is closed to the public. A person was located on the property and issued a warning for criminal trespassing.

• While on a routine patrol, a deputy on Orcas discovered a person occupying a vehicle in a day-use-only area. The person was given a warning for being in a day use area during hours of darkness.

Aug. 27

• A deputy in Friday Harbor issued the driver of a vehicle a citation for having an expired vehicle registration, and warnings for failing to obey a stop sign and for an improper display of tabs.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a disturbance on a ferry that was approaching the Orcas terminal. The skipper told the deputy that an incident had occurred onboard between a passenger and a contract worker. An investigation was conducted and a report was taken.
