Fire crews extinguished a burning chair at an island home the afternoon of Nov. 13.

The Orcas Island Fire Department responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 22 Alder Street.

The residents had returned home to the sound of smoke alarms and called 911. Eastsound Capt. Rita Harvey arrived within four minutes and confirmed everyone was safely out.

Engine 21 was on the scene with charged lines to the door within minutes.

Flames could be seen inside the second story and firefighters quickly ventilated the smoke and located the fire, which was confined to a sofa chair.

The firefighters opened the balcony doors and threw the flaming chair outside onto the grass.

The firefighters and apparatus returned back to service in less than an hour. Eastsound Engine 21 remained for future investigation. The cause was undetermined.

“Thanks to the smoke alarms and the quick call to 911 we were able to get on the scene fast, so damage was very minimal,” said longtime fire officer Jeff Jones.

“This is the kind of event we have trained for extensively. And the training paid off.”
