San Juan County Councilmember for San Juan Island Bill Watson announced on Jan. 15 that he will not seek re-election this fall. His first and only term as a county councilmember expires on Dec. 31, 2020.
Watson said, “I am announcing today that I will retire at the end of 2020 and not seek re-election for a second term as County Councilmember for District #1 in November of 2020. In the final year of my term, I will continue to do my best to serve the citizens of San Juan County.
“The timing of my announcement is intended to give those who may have an interest in seeking office sufficient time to consider carefully the position. I am open to sharing my insights and experiences with anyone who is considering running.”
Watson was elected to the council in November 2016, beating out incumbent Bob Jarman, 55.67 percent to 44.33 percent. Prior to serving on the council, Watson had a long career in the tech industry as a software engineer and manager. He told the Journal when he was elected that he felt strongly about clarifying land-use regulations, fostering year-round employment and encouraging long-term affordable rental housing.
County Councilmember Rick Hughes’ term ends on Dec. 31, 2020, as well, and Councilmember Jamie Stephens’ ends Dec. 31, 2022.
